Piano or Keyboard Lessons?

Piano or Keyboard lessons? There are a few considerations to make before chosing Piano or Keyboard lessons. In tis article I am going to explore the benefits of Piano and keyboard lessons and hopefully help you decide which is the best choice for you.

Piano and Keyboard Lessons for beginners.

Many people believe taking Piano lessons for beginners is much more involved in comparison to learning to play a portable electronic keyboard. This is not necessarly so, it largely depends on the individual teaching style of the Piano or keyboard teacher.

Some Piano teachers teach a more 'hands-on' approach focussing more on the dexterous elements of Piano and Keyboard playing while others focus more on the theoretical approach.
Of course there are equally many Piano and Keyboard teachers who combine a mixture of both elements. I personally employ an equal mixture of both practical keyboard skills and theory study into my lessons because I firmly believe whilst it's necessary to be a good 'keyboard' technician you should equally understand 'why' you are doing what you've been asked to do.

Will I have to take exams if I take Piano Lessons?

Taking exams with external examining bodies such as ABRSM - The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music are by no means mandatory, it's really a question of whether you want to take Piano lessons for fun, accreditation, or both.

Exams tend to be popular with Children because it encourages progress and rewards the child with an acknowledgement for their effort. That's not to say adults can't sit external examinations. It really is a matter of personal choice.

Another popular misconception is that taking Piano lessons for beginners involves playing only classical Piano music, - this is also incorrect. In the early stages whilst studying the rudiments this may be the case, afterwards the Piano student is free to explore other popular genres of music.

The associated board of the royal schools of music have included jazz studies into their graded exams syllabus.

Keyboard lessons for beginners.

Beginning with the most obvious statement which can be made, in as much as an electronic portable keyboard has the capability to emulate a wide variety of keyboard, woodwind, brass, orchestra and synthesiser sounds, the possibilities of playing most types of popular music are infinite.

In my experience learning to play a portable electronic keyboard is often deemed to be the popular choice especially for children and teenagers. I hope this article has been useful in helping you choose which keyboard instrument is right for you.

Will I need a Piano before taking Piano Lessons

Will I need a Piano before taking Piano Lessons? Choosing the right Piano at the best price.
Thank you for visiting my blog. Please stay a while to learn more about Piano lessons, upright Pianos, digital Pianos including what you'll need to know before considering Piano lessons.

I am often asked whether it is necessary to own a Piano prior to taking Piano lessons. The simple and honest answer is 'yes!'  In order to get the most from taking Piano lessons you'll need a Piano for practice sessions, but that doesn't mean you have to invest a serious amount of money.

Traditional upright Piano or Digital Piano?

There are essentially two choices of Piano to consider, an upright Piano, or a digital electronic Piano. The majority of my Piano students tend to opt for the latter choice. There are several benefits to owning a digital Piano. Firstly, low cost. Secondly, portability. Unlike a traditional upright Piano, a digital Piano can easily be moved from one location to another with minimal fuss.

Traditional upright strung Pianos need maintaining throughout their life cycle. Regular tuning being the prime consideration. Another thing to consider is upright Pianos are heavy, and take up a lot of floor space. That said, digital Pianos can only emulate the sound of a traditional upright Piano. For the purist, a traditional upright Piano would be the obvious choice. For me, digital Pianos win hands-down.

You can buy a digital Piano from anywhere in the region of £200.00 - £5,000.  - depending on whether you buy new from a Piano dealer/music shop, or check out the many used digital Piano bargains to be had on websites such as Ebay. If you're unfamiliar with modern digital Pianos then please take a look at these websites. Yamaha digital PianosRoland Digital Pianos.

Keyboard Lessons for Beginners

Local music shops offer group keyboard lessons which on the surface sound like a good idea. However, it's worth bearing in mind that taking group keyboard lessons aren't necessarily the best option, please permit me to eloborate further.

When considering group keyboard lessons you should keep in mind the average group size will vary from approximately 6 students to as many as 10 or more. In terms of cost, you could be looking to pay somewhere in the region of £8 - £10 per 45 minutes lesson. I think you might already see where I'm going with my analogy. The math is quite simple. Assuming there are 6 students in the group and all things are equal, your are likely to receive 6.5 minutes tuition per group keyboard lesson. At worst, 4.5 minutes, which as I think you'll agree is not the ideal solution in terms of progressing towards your desired goal, nor is it good value for money. However, there is an alternative.
